Meet Emma: A Passionate Musician and Inspiring Educator
Emma is a talented musician who has been captivating audiences with her traditional music since the age of 11 when she first picked up the fiddle. By 14, she had added the clarsach (Celtic harp) to her repertoire, and now, at 32, she stands as a skilled artist with extensive performance and teaching experience.
Musical Journey
Emma's musical journey began in her teenage years with the North Ayrshire Traditional Music Group, where she performed at prestigious venues, including the iconic Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Her travels have taken her to stages in France, Spain, Sweden, and Slovenia, showcasing her talent to diverse audiences. In 2007, she was honoured with the title of North Ayrshire Traditional Musician of the Year, a testament to her dedication and skill.
Her commitment to music led her to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD), where she honed her craft at the Junior Academy. Emma furthered her studies at Newcastle University, earning an Honours Degree specialising in folk and traditional music in 2010.
Performance Highlights
Emma’s performance experience spans a variety of settings, from renowned venues like the Sage Gateshead and King Tut's in Glasgow to intimate gigs at care homes, schools, nightclubs, cruise ships, and weddings. She has played alongside bands and solo artists, exploring genres that range from pop to classical and even Indian music. As a sought-after dep for ceilidh bands, Emma brings the joy of traditional dance music to weddings and special events. Notably, she has delighted audiences at Eden Fest in Dumfriesshire and the GOMA in Glasgow. In 2017, she showcased her creativity by releasing an EP titled The Girl with the Cloak, featuring her original songs and arrangements.
Teaching Excellence
With a wealth of teaching experience, Emma is passionate about sharing her love for music. She offers private lessons on the fiddle and clarsach and leads weekly group fiddle classes for adults in Ayrshire. As an instrumental instructor at Arran High School, she has inspired countless students. Emma has also made her mark as a workshop tutor at Cambridge Folk Fest and has conducted successful 'Learning by Ear' workshops at Sidmouth Folk Week in Devon and Beverly Folk Fest in Yorkshire. She is dedicated to fostering creativity in young musicians through songwriting workshops and has led engaging singing and fiddle workshops for students of all ages and abilities in her hometown of North Ayrshire.
